I manage procurement for a 34-person apparel decorating company. I've owned a $210,000 equipment and supplies budget for six years, negotiated with 20+ vendors, and tracked every invoice in our ERP. When someone asks whether we should buy the Kornit Atlas DTG printer, an Andemes DTF printer, or a UV printer 3D, I don't answer with a favorite brand. I answer with a spreadsheet.
Here's the thing: the machine you choose doesn't just change your ink cost. It changes your labor, your floor space, your reject rate, and your client's first impression. We evaluated all three routes in 2024. This breakdown is based on that evaluation, not on anyone's brochure.
The Comparison Framework: What I Actually Tracked
Before looking at equipment, I set four criteria:
- Total cost per finished garment at our real order volume
- Direct labor per garment
- Workflow fit and floor space
- Client quality perception
Why not ink price per liter? Because ink price is a marketing number. The number that matters is cost per garment that passes your own quality check.
Dimension 1: Total Cost per Finished Garment
Let's start with the Kornit Atlas DTG printer. The quote we used included the Atlas system, pretreatment equipment, and onboarding. It's a serious capital expense. But after a month of production trials, our all-in cost per garment—including white ink, colors, pretreatment, labor, downtime, and rejects—came to about $1.92 per shirt on 250-shirt orders.
The Andemes DTF printer quote looked better at first. PET film is cheap, adhesive powder is cheap, and the machine itself is easier to finance. Our direct consumable cost per print was about 15% lower than the Kornit route. But by the time I added the extra operator hours for film handling, powder application, curing, and heat-press transfer, plus a reject rate of around 7% in our shop, the effective cost per accepted garment was $2.14. That was before training time.
And the UV printer 3D? On apparel, it didn't make sense. It's great for phone cases, mousepads, and promotional hard goods. Use it for what it is. The per-garment cost is infinite if it doesn't produce a garment you'd actually ship.
That was the counterintuitive conclusion: the route with cheaper consumables was about 11% more expensive per finished garment in our tests. Why? Because consumables are only half the cost. Labor and rejects are the other half.
Dimension 2: Labor, Workflow, and the 'One More Step' Trap
The best machine is the one your team can actually run at 4:45pm without making costly mistakes.
With the Kornit Atlas DTG printer, the workflow is: pretreat, load, print, cure. One operator can handle it. Across the Kornit printers I've seen in production, that predictability is the real advantage. The Atlas model fits our garment line because it's built for direct-to-garment, not for a long chain of secondary processes.
With the Andemes DTF PET film printer, the workflow is different: print onto PET film, apply adhesive powder, shake it off, cure the powder, then transfer the print using a heat press. That's not an insult to DTF. It's just what the process requires. For us, it meant an extra 1.8 minutes per shirt on average. On a 500-shirt order, that's 15 extra labor hours. That's money.
We also had a communication failure during that evaluation. I said to a DTF supplier, 'we need a film printer for dark garments.' They heard, 'we want a PET film transfer system for everything.' We were using the same words but meaning different things. We discovered that when our sample shirts came back and the hand feel didn't match what our largest client expected. I learned that lesson the hard way.
Floor space matters too. DTF needs room for the printer, powder shaker, curing oven, heat press, and cooling racks. The Kornit Atlas took less space in our shop. The UV printer 3D, if you add one, needs its own island for rigid products. Space is overhead. Overhead is money.
Dimension 3: Client Quality Perception (AKA the Part Procurement People Ignore)
Look, I'm a spreadsheet guy. I don't want to sound like a branding consultant. But client perception has a dollar value.
A potential account once sent us two shirts: one printed on a Kornit Atlas DTG printer, one produced on a DTF PET film printer. They didn't know which was which. They picked the DTG shirt because the hand feel was closer to soft cotton. That was the end of the test.
To be fair, DTF transfers have improved a lot. Andemes makes a solid machine. For jersey numbers, patch-style prints, and certain promotional transfers, DTF is a smart option. But in our selling environment, 'good enough' transfers made our products feel cheaper. You don't need a focus group to know that a slightly rubbery surface reads as lower quality.
UV printer 3D is a different animal again. It has '3D' in the name, but on a t-shirt it prints flat and stiff. On a premium hoodie, that's a no. It doesn't mean the machine is bad. It means it's for the wrong job.
When we switched our main garment line to Kornit, client feedback improved. It wasn't magic. It was the finished product looking and feeling like printed fabric instead of a transfer sticker. That is the brand extension you're investing in.
One more note on claims. We use Kornit's water-based ink system. When a client asks about eco-friendly printing, I can point to lower water usage. But per the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims need substantiation. So I don't use vague terms. I say, 'our process uses less water than traditional screen printing.' That's defensible. That kind of precision also builds trust with procurement teams.
So Which One Pays Off? It Depends on Your Order Mix.
If your core business is custom apparel and your clients expect a soft, premium feel, the Kornit Atlas DTG printer is the more profitable long-term choice for our operation. The upfront cost is higher. But the finished cost, labor impact, and client perception all pointed the same direction.
If you're doing small custom runs, bulk transfers, or you already own a heat press and want to start a side line, an Andemes DTF printer can be a smart entry point. Just include labor in your spreadsheet. Don't compare consumables alone.
If you sell promotional products and rigid blanks, buy a UV printer 3D. But don't ask it to replace DTG. It's a great second machine, not a substitute.
