Kornit Machine Buying Guide: What a Production Manager Learned After 200+ Rush Orders

If you're considering a Kornit machine, the Atlas printer is the one to plan around—but not for the reason most people expect. The other half is understanding what happens when the ink sits, the printheads idle, and the client needs 500 shirts by Friday.

It's flexible, it works on many fabric types, and the entry cost is a fraction of an industrial DTG system. I get why people ask about it. Who wouldn't want to start a printing business for under $2,000?

DTF is great for small runs, samples, and mixed-fabric orders. DTG—especially industrial DTG—is better for consistent, garment-direct production at scale. When a customer says "I need 150 identical black shirts with a full-color front print," DTG gives you a softer hand-feel, no film layer, and a more authentic print. When they say "I need 15 different designs on 15 different garment styles by tomorrow," DTF might be the only way to make that deadline.

I've tested budget DTF equipment (I won't name the brands, but they're well-known in the budget space) and the results can be impressive for the price. But we've also seen adhesion issues on certain polyester blends, and the powder application process has a learning curve. Your mileage may vary—especially if your orders are mostly polyester sportswear. For pure cotton, industrial DTG still wins in my book.

What about a DTF Brother printer?

People also search for a DTF Brother printer, which is understandable—Brother makes one of the most popular DTG machines for small shops, the Brother GTX series. But Brother doesn't currently make a dedicated DTF printer (as of this writing). If someone's selling you a "Brother DTF printer," it's likely a converted Brother inkjet or a third-party modification. That's not necessarily bad—conversions exist—but you're giving up warranty coverage and you need to be careful about printhead compatibility.

Here's a practical piece of advice: buy the printer that matches the workflow you actually have, not the one that fits the search term. If you're planning to do DTF, buy a machine designed for it. If you're planning to do DTG on a budget, buy a used Brother GTX or a new mid-range model. If you want to scale to industrial volumes, you should be looking at Kornit (or similar industrial systems).

That said, I still have a soft spot for Brother. When we were starting out, a Brother GT-541 got us through our first two years. It was slow, it was finicky, and it required regular maintenance. But it taught me more about DTG than any training manual ever did. (Note to self: I really should write down some of those early lessons before I forget them.)

Does inkjet printer ink dry out? The answer is yes—and it's not always bad news

This is one of the most common questions I hear, usually from someone who just bought a DTG or DTF printer. The answer is straightforward: yes, inkjet printer ink absolutely dries out—or at least the carrier fluid evaporates.

But the more useful answer is: it depends on the ink type, the printhead system, and how often you use the machine.

Water-based inks (like the ones Kornit uses) are more prone to evaporation, which is why DTG printers have aggressive head capping and cleaning cycles. If you leave a water-based DTG printer idle for a few weeks without running a maintenance cycle, you're asking for clogged nozzles. Solvent and eco-solvent inks are less sensitive to evaporation, but they have their own issues. DTF inks, depending on the formulation, often sit somewhere in between—which is why some DTF manufacturers recommend shaking the ink bottles regularly.

One thing that surprised me when I started in this industry: the ink isn't the only thing that dries out. The white ink in particular has heavier pigments that settle. You can shake the bottle, but if it's been sitting in the lines, you'll see inconsistent opacity. This is more common on budget machines that don't agitate ink proactively.

How we keep ink from drying out (and what to do if it does)

  • Your primary fabric mix is heavy polyester/athletic wear. DTG works better on natural fibers. For polyester, dye sublimation or DTF might be a better fit.
  • You're purely doing "one-off" fulfillment for marketplaces. You don't need the Atlas—you need something modular and flexible.

There's also the service aspect. Industrial machines need industrial support. Kornit has a network of service technicians, and that's valuable. But if you're located in a region with limited coverage, the response time matters more than the machine specs. Same logic applies to any premium equipment: research the service ecosystem before you buy.

The bottom line

Quality is the brand image, whether you're printing sports teams, fashion lines, or event merchandise. The moment a client sees a faded print or cracked vinyl, they don't blame the ink—they blame you. That's why we've shifted our more demanding production to industrial DTG equipment. The $50 difference per project between a budget workflow and a premium one translated directly to better client retention.

But "premium" doesn't have to mean "most expensive." It means matching the machine to the job, maintaining it properly, and being honest about your own limits. My recommendation: if you're serious about garment printing and you have the volume, take a hard look at the Kornit Atlas. But don't buy it because it's the biggest name. Buy it because your workload demands it, your environment can support it, and your team is ready to run it.

And if you're eyeing the Vevor DTF or a converted Brother system? They have their place. Just know what you're getting into. I've seen both approaches work—and both fail spectacularly. The difference wasn't the machine. It was the planning, training, and patience of the people running it.

If I could redo any decision from my earlier years, it would be this: take the time to build a proper maintenance schedule and document everything. Printing is 20% creativity and 80% consistency. The sooner you treat it that way, the fewer emergencies you'll have.
