If you're researching industrial apparel decoration, here's the bottom line: For most shops with steady cotton volume, the Kornit Breeze DTG printer is the most practical first production DTG machine—but it's a six-figure decision that only works if you build a consistent workflow around it. I've been managing production equipment purchases since 2020, and I say that after almost going with a cheaper alternative that would have been a disaster.
The Breeze isn't the fastest Kornit printer, and it's not the cheapest machine on the market. But as a production direct-to-garment system, it hits a sweet spot. Before you let a DTF printer company convince you otherwise—or before you get tempted by cheap thermal inkjet printer manufacturers—read this with an open mind. I'll tell you the good, the bad, and what I'd do differently.
The short version
Here's what you need to know: the Kornit Breeze DTG printer is reliable in a way that under-50k machines usually aren't. In Q4 2024, I collected quotes from three certified vendors for our budget. The spread was roughly $150,000-$250,000 depending on configuration, training, and service agreement. That's a lot of money. But I've also seen the alternative: a 'budget' printer that saved one shop $18,000 upfront—and cost them more than that in downtime within the first year. (That story in a minute.)
The key number to think about is utilization, not list price. If you're printing at least 60-80 garments per day, the Breeze can justify itself. Below that, you're paying for capacity you won't use. I'll come back to that in the caveats.
Why my perspective is worth your time
I'm the person who signs off on production purchases for our 25-person decorating company. I manage roughly $220,000 in annual equipment and supply orders across six vendor categories. I report to both operations and finance, so I get pressure from both sides: operations wants uptime, finance wants low cost. That tension has taught me a few things.
When I took over purchasing in 2020, the first thing I did was map every printer-related expense—direct costs, consumables, repairs, and the soft cost of missed deadlines. That's when I noticed something: the 'cheap' printer we'd bought before my time was actually the most expensive machine we had, once you added in wasted shirts, reprints, and late fees. Trust me on this one: the sticker price is the least useful number on the proposal.
So my perspective is not about specs. I care about total cost of ownership, training curves, and how a machine makes us look when clients walk through the door.
What Kornit printers actually bring
Kornit isn't just a printer. It's an ecosystem of ink, pretreatment, software, and service. That can feel restrictive, but it also removes a lot of variables. The Kornit portfolio includes the Breeze for entry-level production, the Atlas for higher throughput, and the Presto for roll-to-roll. In my opinion, the Breeze is the no-brainer for a first production DTG line—if you're doing cotton garments and need consistent white ink coverage.
The biggest thing I noticed when I tested the Breeze was color consistency. We ran 50 shirts in one order, checked every tenth one, and the color density barely moved. Try that with a cheap thermal inkjet printer from a no-name manufacturer, and you'll see why people end up buying twice. If you've ever had a demo print look perfect but the production run look patchy, you know that feeling.
To be fair, Kornit's software has a learning curve. It's not the kind of machine you hand to someone with no DTG experience and expect perfection. But the training is structured, and the support is real. Compared to a DTF printer company that sells you a roll of film and disappears, that matters.
Where the Breeze fits—and where it doesn't
If your job mix is 70% or more cotton garments, the Kornit Breeze DTG printer is a strong fit. It excels at white ink on dark shirts, which is where most budget DTG machines fall apart. It's also a good fit if you care about print feel—the hand of a Breeze print is softer than what I've seen from low-cost DTG systems.
But here are the boundary conditions:
- If you're doing a lot of polyester or blends, a DTG printer is not your best friend. That's where DTF or sublimation can actually be smarter.
- If your average order is 5-20 pieces and you need to switch designs constantly, a Breeze can handle it, but you'll spend a lot of time on pretreatment and curing.
- If you're not willing to train someone to operate it properly, you'll be disappointed. The machine can't fix bad workflow.
Granted, that last point sounds obvious. But you'd be surprised how many shops buy an industrial printer and expect it to work like a home office inkjet. It won't. Shirts have to be pretreated, cured, and loaded in consistent positions. If that sounds like too much, a Breeze is overkill for you.
The trap: cheap thermal inkjet printer manufacturers
I almost made the mistake of choosing a cheap thermal inkjet printer manufacturer's machine to save money. The quote was about $18,000 less than the Kornit Breeze. It looked smart on paper. (Surprise, surprise.)
Within the first six months, the printheads needed replacement twice, color profiles constantly drifted, and the 'technical support' was a person who answered messages late at night. We spent $26,000 in replacement parts, reprints, and missed deliveries. Net loss compared to going with the Breeze from the start: about $8,000—plus a client who quietly stopped reordering.
That was my penny-wise, pound-foolish moment. As a buyer, you want to show savings. But the real cost isn't the purchase order. It's what happens after the ink dries.
The most frustrating part of evaluating cheap printers is how good they look in a demo. You print one test shirt, it comes out fine. Then you run 100 shirts, and every 20th one has a faded area. You'd think a test would catch that, but demos don't simulate your shift on a Tuesday.
DTF vs. DTG: don't let a DTF printer company make it an either-or
If a DTF printer company tells you DTG is dead, don't believe it. And if a Kornit rep tells you DTF is a fad, don't believe that either. DTF is excellent for polyester and blended fabrics, and it requires less pretreatment. But DTG still wins on pure cotton and on print feel—which, in my opinion, is directly tied to how your clients perceive your brand.
Clients may not know what kind of printer you use, but they can feel the difference between a plasticky transfer and a print that feels part of the fabric. The Kornit Breeze produces the latter. For a business that relies on referrals and repeat orders, that's not a small thing. I'd argue it's the whole ballgame.
We eventually added a small DTF setup for synthetic and athletic wear. That combination has been a game-changer. Now each machine does what it's good at. Dodged a bullet when a DTF rep tried to sell us a full fleet before we tested it on cotton. Don't let a DTF printer company talk you into replacing DTG entirely—unless your entire line is polyester. Then, honestly, maybe you don't need a DTG printer at all.
What about an Audley UV printer?
Here's a left turn: if a significant part of your work is hard goods—bottles, pens, phone cases, metal tags—a DTG printer is the wrong tool. That's not a Kornit problem; it's a substrate problem.
An Audley UV printer (or similar flatbed/roll-fed UV machine) handles rigid materials much better than any DTG system. We didn't buy one because our mix is 90% apparel, but I've seen shops run both a DTG line and a UV line effectively. If you're regularly asked for branded merchandise, factor that into your equipment plan before you commit to any single technology.
The lesson: the best Kornit printer in the world won't help you if you're trying to print on a tumbler. Match the machine to the media, not to the brand.
Before you sign: caveats and exceptions
I'll end with some things nobody from a manufacturer will tell you.
First, if you're doing fewer than 15,000 impressions a year, I'd argue against buying any production DTG machine—including a Kornit. At that volume, outsourcing to a trade printer is cheaper, and you don't need the headache of treatment and curing on your own floor. I know that's not the answer a vendor wants to hear, but it's the truth.
Second, used equipment can be a gamble. I've seen good deals on used Kornit printers, and I've seen a used Breeze that looked fine in photos but had head carriage problems. Get a certified inspection and a service history before you wire money. That's also a red flag if the seller won't allow it. (As of January 2025, certified-pre-owned routes are worth checking, but prices vary widely.)
Third, the after-sale service agreement is as important as the machine. Make sure you understand how many service calls are included, how long response time is, and what happens when you need a replacement part. That's where the 'cheaper' quote often falls apart. If support is vague, that's a deal-breaker in my book.
If you ask me, the Kornit Breeze DTG printer is the right call for a specific, common situation: cotton-heavy apparel decoration, production volume that can keep it busy, and a team that treats printing as a process rather than a luxury. It's expensive, sure. But after years of watching equipment purchases, I'd rather justify a cost than apologize for quality.
