The Kornit Apollo Price Isn't the Problem. The Hidden Cost of Cheap Printers Is.

A B2B procurement manager's perspective on why the Kornit Apollo price and Kornit machine reliability need to be evaluated through total cost of ownership—not sticker price.

If you ask me, the Kornit Apollo price conversation is usually about the wrong number. Everyone focuses on the invoice. Few people model what a machine actually costs over three years of production. From my perspective, that's where the real financial pain—or payoff—shows up.

I'm not in purchasing because I love spreadsheets. I'm in it because someone has to make sure the shop runs without drama. I'm an office administrator for an 80-person apparel decorating company, and I manage roughly 60-80 equipment and supply orders annually across two locations. I report to both operations and finance, which means I see every cost, every delay, and every compromise.

The Wrong Way to Read a Price Tag

The 'cheapest machine is the smart buy' thinking comes from an era when high-volume digital textile printing options were limited. Today, that's changed. A low upfront price can vanish in the first six months if the machine needs constant attention. In my opinion, the Kornit Apollo price deserves to be looked at through a different lens: total cost of ownership.

What I mean by total cost of ownership is simple: add up everything a machine costs from the day it arrives to the day you replace it. Not just the base price. Installation, training, consumables, service visits, downtime, reprints, and the cost of missed deadlines. The invoice is a starting point, not the final answer. A Kornit machine is a serious investment. But so is a cheaper machine—you just may not see the cost until it bites you.

The Number That Actually Matters: Total Cost of Ownership

When I compare quotes, I build a simple TCO model. It usually has five buckets:

  • Base price and installation
  • Consumables and routine maintenance
  • Expected downtime and service response
  • Reprints and wasted material
  • Labor required per batch

The last one is the easiest to miss. If a machine needs an extra operator for the same output, that salary is part of the price. If a machine runs 20% faster but needs 15% more maintenance, the speed advantage shrinks fast. That's why I don't lead with the cheapest quote. The $500 quote that turns into $800 after fees is not a rare story—it's the normal one.

In 2024, I was part of a vendor consolidation project. We reduced our supplier list from eight to four, but we kept the print equipment with the most predictable service history. Predictability matters more than speed, and honestly, more than price. If you're searching for an 'industriële inkjet printer' from a European supplier, I'd apply the same standard. Same machine, same math, same long-term risk.

A Kornit machine is not the right tool for every shop. But for a shop that needs volume and repeatability, it's a different category from entry-level equipment. It's built for production, not for prototyping. That distinction matters when you're planning capacity.

Sustainability Claims: Verify, Don't Just Believe

Another area where I see hidden costs is sustainability claims. In apparel printing, terms like 'less waste' or 'cleaner chemistry' get thrown around a lot. I don't dismiss them, but I do check them. According to the FTC's Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260), environmental claims must be truthful and substantiated. So before I walk a sustainability story into a finance meeting, I ask for the data behind it.

Kornit talks about a more responsible approach to textile decoration. I pay attention to that. But I'd pay attention to it for any vendor. The point is: don't let a green label be the reason you ignore the TCO model. And don't let a green label be the reason you overpay for a machine that doesn't fit your volume.

The Objection I Always Hear: 'The Cheaper Machine Can Do the Same Job'

To be fair, there's a version of this argument that's true. If you're printing 5,000 pieces a year, the Kornit Apollo price will never make sense. You don't need an industrial platform for a studio workload. I'd tell you to look at smaller machines, or even at other processes.

But when a growing shop says 'the cheaper machine can do the same job,' I slow down. It can do a similar job, at a different scale, with a different duty cycle. That's not a knock on the cheaper machine. It's a category boundary. A production-focused Kornit machine is built for continuous operation. If your business depends on volume and repeatability, that's not a luxury. It's a requirement.

I ran the risk calculation once. The upside was 30% lower upfront cost. The risk was unpredictable downtime. I kept asking myself: is a discount worth potentially missing a client's deadline? The answer was no.

I'm also not anti-DTF or anti-sublimation. There are sublimation printer deals that make sense for the right product mix. And if your actual application is rigid substrate printing, then a high-speed hybrid UV LED printer is probably the right tool. My point is not about which technology wins. My point is about how you evaluate the purchase.

What I'd Tell a Buyer on the Fence

Do the math before you fall in love with a machine. You don't need to know every possible scenario. You need to know your own volume, your labor cost, your reprint rate, and the value of your deadlines. Then compare quotes on that basis.

I still second-guess big decisions. After we chose the higher-priced system, I hit 'confirm' and immediately thought: did I overpay? The first quarter until the production data came in was stressful. But once I saw service calls drop and output climb, the answer was clear. Not ideal on the stress side, but workable—and ultimately profitable.

So, would I still recommend looking at the Kornit Apollo price? Yes. But I'd also recommend looking at your total cost model first. The price tag tells you what you'll pay. The model tells you what it's worth. In my opinion, that's the only responsible way to buy a production asset.
