Three years and one underutilized machine later, I learned the hard way that the “best” printer is the one that fits your actual production mix. I report to both operations and finance, which means my equipment decisions get evaluated from two sides: production wants capability, and accounting wants utilization numbers.
Here's what I tell anyone who asks for a recommendation: it depends. Not as an escape hatch, but because it genuinely does. The three factors that decide this are production volume, product type, and application. Based on those, most shops land in one of four scenarios—and each one points to a different technology: Kornit DTG systems, DTF printer sets, color UV printers, or continuous inkjet printers.
Scenario 1: You're Printing 500+ Custom Garments a Day → Look at Kornit
If custom apparel is your core revenue stream and you're running sustained daily production, you need an industrial-grade DTG system. That's the Kornit use case, plain and simple.
I've been inside facilities running Kornit printing lines, and the difference between a true industrial DTG system and a lower-tier setup is night and day. These machines are built for shifts, not single jobs. The Kornit Atlas lineup, for example, is designed around consistent throughput with minimal operator intervention. The Presto goes further with one-pass production on untreated fabric, which simplifies your workflow considerably.
One thing that surprised me when I evaluated Kornit for our shop: the support structure is a big part of the value. Kornit support includes operator training, remote diagnostics, and regional service teams. But response times vary by region—I'm not exaggerating. I always ask for the names of three existing customers in my area and call them directly before signing. That habit has saved me from at least two bad purchase decisions.
Here's where I have to be honest: if you're printing 2,000 garments a month or less, a full Kornit system is overkill. Scenario 2: You're Testing the Market or Starting Out → Consider a DTF Printer Set
If you're a smaller operation, just getting into garment decoration, or adding textile printing to a business that doesn't revolve around it, a DTF printer set deserves serious consideration.
These setups are significantly more affordable than industrial DTG systems. They take up less floor space, and you can run short batch orders without committing a dedicated operator to every shift. For a shop that wants to test a new product line or serve a small but growing customer base, the lower entry cost reduces the risk of an expensive machine sitting idle.
But I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't point out the tradeoffs. DTF transfers have a different hand feel and finish compared to direct-to-garment printing. The transfer layer sits on the fabric rather than being absorbed into it. Some customers—especially premium apparel brands—can tell the difference immediately. I've watched production staff reject DTF samples after seeing DTG output side by side.
Here's the balanced view: DTF and Kornit aren't enemies. A DTF printer set can be the right entry point, and many shops graduate to a Kornit system once volume justifies the upgrade. But plan for that transition, because it's not just a hardware swap—it's a change in workflow, consumables, and operator training.
Scenario 3: You're Being Asked to Print on Hard Goods → A Color UV Printer Is a Different Category
What if your customers are asking for phone cases, mugs, pens, or other non-textile items? That world is completely different from garment printing. A color UV printer is the workhorse here, but the buying criteria look nothing like DTG or DTF.
UV printing works by curing ink with ultraviolet light. Because the ink cures instantly and doesn't rely on absorption, UV printers can mark non-porous surfaces—glass, plastic, metal, wood—that traditional textile dyes can't touch. That capability is exactly why you'd add one to a print shop even if you already run DTG equipment.
When evaluating a color UV printer, pay attention to printable height (can it handle thick items?), resolution, and how much manual masking happens between jobs. Here's my rule (note to self, learned the expensive way): always ask for a test print using your actual product, not a flat acrylic sheet. Some UV printers handle curved or textured surfaces much better than others. The test print reveals that in about five minutes.
One honest caution: a UV printer won't replace your DTG or DTF system, and it shouldn't. It's a complement, not a substitute. If you're considering a UV printer because the price seems lower than a Kornit system, make sure you're actually solving the right problem.
Scenario 4: You're Printing Dates, Barcodes, or Lot Codes → What a Continuous Inkjet Printer Actually Is
People often ask me “what is a continuous inkjet printer” when they're shopping for equipment, and the confusion is understandable—the name sounds like it should be in the same family as other inkjet systems. It isn't.
A continuous inkjet (CIJ) printer pumps a constant stream of ink through a nozzle at high pressure. The stream breaks into droplets that pass through a charge electrode. Each droplet picks up an electrical charge, and deflector plates direct it to the exact spot on the substrate. Uncharged droplets get recirculated back into the ink supply. The result is a fast, non-contact marking system that works on uneven or curved surfaces—cans, cables, pill bottles, film packaging.
According to a 2024 technical primer from Inkjet Insight, this technology has been used in industrial coding and marking since the 1960s. It's mature and reliable, and it's suited for one thing: variable data printing—date codes, serial numbers, barcodes. If you're a garment decoration shop, a CIJ printer is almost certainly not what you need.
I once had a sales rep try to sell us a CIJ unit by saying it could “also print on shirts.” Technically true—in the same way a hammer can screw in a screw. The print quality and color depth on fabric would be nowhere near what a Kornit or DTG system produces. Different tool, different job. (And yes, we walked away from that one.)
How to Know Which Scenario You're In
Here's the decision framework I use when internal stakeholders disagree about equipment:
- What percentage of your revenue is custom textile printing? If it's 80% or more and the volume is high, the Kornit direction makes sense. If it's a smaller slice, a DTF printer set gets you into the market with less risk.
- Do people ask you to personalize items that aren't fabric? Then a color UV printer belongs in your plan as a separate line item. It won't show up in the same purchase decision as your textile equipment.
- Are you an apparel shop being pitched a CIJ machine? Reconsider. Unless you're also running a packaging operation that needs date codes or lot marking, a continuous inkjet printer solves a problem you don't have.
The Transition Question
Also think about the future, not just today. If you're planning to grow aggressively, starting with a DTF setup and switching to Kornit later means two technology transitions, two training cycles, and two sets of consumables to manage. That's not necessarily the wrong move—but it's a real cost that should be part of your conversation, not an afterthought.
The Bottom Line
I still kick myself for that first equipment purchase where I assumed the biggest machine was the right machine. If I'd matched the technology to our actual workload from day one, the department would have avoided a six-figure mistake.
The lesson I keep coming back to: the right printer is the one that gives you the lowest cost per good output for your specific situation—not the one with the most impressive spec sheet or the most recognizable brand. Kornit printing systems are excellent for high-volume textile production. DTF printer sets serve smaller operations well. A color UV printer extends a shop into hard goods. None of these are universal winners. That's not a bug; it's the reality of a market with different customers, different volumes, and different products. The trick isn't finding the best printer on paper—it's figuring out which scenario you're actually in and buying for that.
