Why I Recommend Kornit Printers for Rush Orders (and Who Shouldn't Buy One)

A production manager's honest take on Kornit printers, Kornit Presto price, and when they actually pay off. Includes why you might choose DTF printer DIY, a UV Lego printer, or a portable inkjet printer for plastic bags instead.

If your business depends on turning orders around fast, I believe Kornit printers are worth every dollar you have to budget for them. I also believe that most shops that buy them shouldn't have. That sounds contradictory, so let me explain.

I'm the production manager at a mid-size decorated apparel company. I've handled 200+ rush orders in seven years, including same-day turnarounds for clients who honestly should have planned better. When I'm triaging a rush order, I don't care about buzzwords. I care about time remaining, whether the job is physically possible in that window, and what the worst-case failure costs. That's the lens I use to recommend printing equipment.

What the last real emergency taught me

In March 2024, a client called at 4:30 pm on a Thursday needing 1,200 branded tees by Monday for a conference they'd just confirmed. Normal turnaround for a job that size is five to seven business days after artwork approval. The artwork wasn't approved until 6 pm. I won't pretend there was a dramatic epiphany. The final number depends on configuration, training, installation, service, and your facility's electrical and airflow situation. When we evaluated adding a Presto in 2024, the quote package was in the ballpark of $300,000 to $500,000. Please don't hold me to that—I'm not 100% sure what the range is today, and anyone who quotes you a firm number without a site audit is guessing.

That range is hard to swallow. I get it. But I also know the alternative: emergency outsourcing, missed deadlines, and customers who get tired of hearing "we had a vendor problem."

Before you sign anything, also think about the floor space, ventilation, and whether your team can run it. A Kornit is not plug-and-play. It's a production asset that needs skilled operators. If you don't have someone who'll treat it like a serious tool, the machine won't save you.

When a Kornit is the wrong answer

Here's where I might upset the sales team: If your primary need is one-off DTF transfers or ultra-low-volume printing, don't buy a Kornit. I tell people this all the time. There is no single "best printer." There is only the right printer for the work you actually do.

If you're a small shop experimenting with transfers, a DTF printer DIY setup can be a sensible way to test the market. If you need to print on plastic packaging, a portable inkjet printer for plastic bags is a completely different category. If you print on plastic bricks for promotional products, a UV Lego printer is another specialty machine altogether. Those are not Kornit's game. Trying to use a production DTG printer for those jobs is how people end up with expensive equipment collecting dust.

I can only speak to garment decorating and industrial textile printing. If you're dealing with packaging or rigid substrates, the calculus is different. Our experience may not apply to you.

But wait—what about cheaper printers?

I know what some of you are thinking: "Why spend Kornit money when a cheap DTG printer or a DIY DTF kit costs a fraction of that?" Honestly, if you're doing short runs and your color tolerance is flexible, a cheaper printer might be the right call. I'd make the same choice.

But if you've ever lost a client because a budget machine mangled the print on the last reorder, you understand why production shops buy predictability. The cost of one failed rush order—refunds, wasted blanks, damaged credibility—is way higher than the amortized difference between a $5,000 printer and a $150,000 one. "Reliable" doesn't mean "never breaks." It means "when the deadline is real, the machine will probably do its part."

Final word

Kornit printers are not for everyone. That's not a flaw in the recommendation; it's the reason you can trust it. I recommend them for production shops with volume, brand-color requirements, and deadlines that can't slip. I actively recommend against them for hobbyists, side hustles, and shops whose main business is DTF or niche rigid printing.

One more thing: if you're going to advertise Kornit's sustainability advantages to your customers, be prepared to substantiate them. The FTC Green Guides exist for a reason, and environmental claims need evidence. But that's a separate conversation—and honestly, it's a good problem to have if the equipment is paying for itself.

Take it from someone who has stood in a dark warehouse on a Sunday evening waiting for a machine to finish. There are two kinds of shop owners: those who think "expensive" and "reliable" are the same word, and those who eventually learn that lesson the hard way. You don't have to be the second kind.
